South Carolinians Spend More of Their Income on Groceries Than Most Americans

Grocery Costs Squeeze South Carolina Families

South Carolina ranks 9th in the nation for grocery costs as a share of median household income, according to WalletHub. Grocery spending represents about 2.21% of median monthly household income in the state. Meanwhile, estimates put average food and grocery spending at about $360 per month for one person and roughly $1,442 per month for a family of four.

Sc Ranks 9Th For Grocery Cost Burden

South Carolina’s grocery prices are not necessarily among the nation’s highest, but they take a comparatively large bite out of household income. WalletHub ranks the state 9th nationally, with grocery spending equal to about 2.21% of median monthly household income. Nationally, USDA reported grocery-store food prices were 2.7% higher in July 2026 than a year earlier and projected food-at-home prices to rise about 2.5% in 2026.

About

SC GOP Tracker keeps tabs on what South Carolina Republican elected officials, candidates and political leaders are saying, doing and putting on the record.

We gather publicly available statements, votes, policy positions, interviews, social media posts, news coverage and other source material, then bring it together in one place with relevant context.

Each Tracker Entry is built to be clear, easy to follow and easy to verify — with links to the original reporting, public records, video, social posts or other supporting sources whenever possible.

The idea is simple: you shouldn’t have to dig through dozens of websites, news stories and social media feeds to keep up with what South Carolina Republicans are saying and doing.

As new statements, votes, policies and developments emerge, SC GOP Tracker will keep adding to the record.
