Wilson Hesitates On Dominion–Nextera Megamerger As Ratepayer Questions Mount

Wilson said he wasn’t sure how he would be involved in the merger as governor

Republican gubernatorial nominee Alan Wilson said he had spoken with leadership from NextEra Energy and Dominion Energy but wanted additional discussions about what the proposed merger would look like. Wilson said his priorities on energy include keeping South Carolina energy independent and affordable while investing in infrastructure and workforce development.

Deal Would Reshape a Major South Carolina Utility — Approximately 820,000 South Carolina customers could be affected

Johnson said he would have “absolutely” intervened in the PSC merger case. NextEra Energy and Dominion Energy filed for regulatory approval of their proposed combination in July 2026. The companies say customers in South Carolina, Virginia and North Carolina would share $2.25 billion in shareholder-funded bill credits and that merger-related costs would not be passed to customers. Critics and intervenors have raised concerns about long-term rates, competition and consumer protections. The South Carolina Public Service Commission opened Docket 2026-186-EG to review the transaction.

About

SC GOP Tracker keeps tabs on what South Carolina Republican elected officials, candidates and political leaders are saying, doing and putting on the record.

We gather publicly available statements, votes, policy positions, interviews, social media posts, news coverage and other source material, then bring it together in one place with relevant context.

Each Tracker Entry is built to be clear, easy to follow and easy to verify — with links to the original reporting, public records, video, social posts or other supporting sources whenever possible.

The idea is simple: you shouldn’t have to dig through dozens of websites, news stories and social media feeds to keep up with what South Carolina Republicans are saying and doing.

As new statements, votes, policies and developments emerge, SC GOP Tracker will keep adding to the record.
